My vision for the future:
A world where the solutions to some of the most pressing social problems are generated by the very people who are living those realities. People are heard. They are validated. And their solutions are valued and put into action.
I think a microphone is the ultimate weapon in a social justice struggle. It's the way in which we peacefully yet powerfully ensure people can't say they didn't know. The voices of working people, of communities of color, immigrants, youth--of all of the formerly silenced--can only be heard if there is a vehicle, a tool, a mechanism, to powerfully broadcast these diverse voices, opinions and solutions.
North Star Fund has, over the years, worked meticulously with a rich diversity of communities struggling on the frontlines for social change. I have two very little children, and it's thrilling for me to think that they might live in a world where the North Star community has generated and implemented solutions to today's social injustices.
