Betty Kapetanakis Memorial Internship


Betty Kapetanakis was a leader in New York’s progressive funding community, and served as North Star Fund’s Executive Director from 1995 until her tragic death in 2002. During her tenure at North Star Fund, she helped raise and distribute millions of dollars to thousands of grassroots activist groups throughout the five boroughs. She was well known in the larger activist community as a lifelong, tireless champion of empowerment, civil rights, gender and racial equity, workers’ rights and peace.

The Betty Kapetanakis Memorial Intern (BK Intern) will have the chance to work in an exciting, dynamic philanthropic institution and gain hands-on experience in fund raising and grant making. Specific duties for the BK Intern include:

Development

  1. Work with Development staff around event planning and implementation (mailings, working with venue, sponsorships, logistics, etc.)
  2. Research information about prospective donors
  3. Enter donor information into the donor tracking software program

Communications

  1. Assist Communications staff in researching and cultivating relationships with media contacts
  2. Assist Communications staff in updating the website and creating a North Star blog and/or social networking pages
  3. Write articles for North Star newsletter

Administrative

  1. Provide support to groups using the Betty Kapetanakis Memorial Conference Room
  2. Provide administrative support to staff as needed (copies, attendee confirmation, etc.)

Program

  1. Assist Program staff with logistics and administrative tasks related to grants given by North Star Fund, including scheduling site visits with Community Funding Committee members, publicizing our grants deadlines, data entry and filing

Interns must be CUNY students or graduates of CUNY within the last 6 months. The stipend is $9 per hour and includes a monthly MetroCard. The position can be full-time or part-time, depending on the schedule of the intern.
