Henry Serrano
Henry Serrano joins North Star Fund's board as the co-chair of our Community Funding Committee. Currently, Henry works as Senior Organizer for Community Voices Heard (CVH), an organization of low-income people, predominantly women with experience on welfare, working to build power in New York City and State to improve the lives of their families and communities. In addition to his own organizing work, Henry supervises and guides the work of other organizers, and leads CVH's Voter Engagement Project.
In many ways, Henry's contribution to North Star is a continuation
of his work in the field.
According to Henry, "Empowerment at the grassroots level is a value that I share with North Star Fund. North Star provides resources to create and sustain leadership in diverse communities. It looks to give those leaders significant and authentic decision-making
power. And it expects that those leaders will accept responsibility and accountability for the growth of their communities."
Henry's many years of experience in the field of grassroots activism have served North Star Fund well. He brings deep knowledge of our constituencies and social justice movements in New York City. On site visits to grant applicants, our grantees often share that they really appreciate his feedback and insight, as a peer and experienced resource.
Says Henry, "Through organizations funded by North Star, people who have been left out of the process have a voice in decisions and policies that affect their own communities. North Star Fund's prioritization of these efforts ensures not only the continued growth of community organizing, but that the voices and the power in our community remain representative and diverse."
